St. Michael Parish seeks to inspire people to “Rise Up Now!” and live a Sacramental life. The Sacraments are central to experiencing Christ’s presence in our lives and help us to strengthen and enrich our faith and discipleship in Christ.
In order to participate in the Sacraments, St. Michael Parish offers Sacramental Preparation programs designed to help participants more fully understand each Sacrament prior to receiving it by reviewing the meaning of the rites, discussing participants’ expectations and obligations, and imparting the full teachings of the Church about that Sacrament.
- Baptism – the rite of initiation into the Christian community of the Church. Parents who wish to have their babies baptized should review the baptism requirements. Adults and older children who are new to the Catholic faith would prepare for Baptism by taking Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA).
- Eucharist – we receive the Body of Christ and encounter God’s presence in personal and profound ways. We celebrate the Eucharist at every Mass; see the USCCB guidelines for reception of Holy Communion. Children generally receive their First Communion in 2nd grade. The Religious Education curriculum at St. Michael School or our Parish School of Religion (PSR) is required to prepare them for this. Adults prepare for their First Communion as part of the RCIA program.
- Confirmation – we renew our baptismal promises and receive in a new way the gift of the Holy Spirit. Children of the Diocese of Columbus are generally confirmed in 8th grade. It is expected that children participate in our Parish School of Religion (PSR) program to prepare for this; the Religious Education curriculum at St. Michael School is also designed to prepare 8th graders for Confirmation. Adults wishing to be confirmed would go through Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA).
- Penance and Reconciliation – we confess our sins and through God’s mercy and forgiveness are reconciled with God and called to make amends and repair our relationships. Reconciliation is available every Saturday 2:30 – 3:30 pm in the church, or at any other time on request (contact the Parish office). Children generally prepare for their First Reconciliation during 2nd grade; the curriculum at St. Michael School and in our Parish School of Religion (PSR) is designed to prepare 2nd graders for their first experience of Sacrament.
- Anointing of the Sick – is received by those who are ill or suffering. By the sacred anointing and the prayer of the priest, the whole Church commends those who are sick to Christ. The sick person receives the Holy Spirit’s gifts of strength, faith, peace, and courage, and his or her suffering is united with the suffering of Christ for the building up of the Church. Anointing of the Sick is available upon request; please contact the Parish office.
- Matrimony – In Christian marriage, spouses model the love and self-gift of Christ. By giving of themselves and serving one another, their family, and community, they help one another live out Christ’s call to discipleship, love, and service. Marriage provides a foundation for a family committed to community, solidarity, and Jesus’ mission in the world. Couples wishing to be married in the Church should review our parish’s matrimony requirements and contact the Parish office at least 6 months prior to the desired wedding date.
- Holy Orders – Ordination to the priesthood is always a call and a gift from God. Those who seek priesthood respond generously to God’s call using the words of the prophet, “Here I am, send me” (Is 6:8). If you feel called to the priesthood, please contact our Parish office to discuss.
